Archive / Collection information

Collection includes:

Maps (1849-present). Historical maps of Altadena, Pasadena, the San Gabriel Valley area, and Los Angeles. Political maps, Angeles National Forest maps, maps of local mountain ranges, charts and schematics of the Mt. Lowe Railroad, U.S. Geological Survey maps.

Newspapers. Print and microfilm copies of local newspapers

Clippings. Newspaper clippings dating back to the late 1800s of topics related to local history, including Eaton Canyon, Christmas Tree Lane, churches, annexation, houses, the Sheriff's Department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Altadena town hall meetings, the Census, and local business and industry.

Photographs. Historical collection of photographs and views of topics related to local history, including Altadenans, churches, Christmas Tree Lane, historic homes and hotels, the Mt. Lowe Railroad, Pacific Electric Railway, Mt. Wilson, natural disasters, and others.

Postcards (1908-?). A collection of postcards portraying local topics landmarks, including the Alpine Tavern, the Altadena Country Club, Mt. Wilson, houses and hotels, Devil's Gate Dame, Pacific Electric Railway.

Books by Local Authors. A reference collection of books by notable local authors, including Zane Grey, Jean Burden, and Octavia Butler.

Telephone Directories (1911-1980). A collection of local telephone directors (and reverse phone books) that list residents and local businesses.

Pamphlets. A collection of pamphlets that cover topics like community planning, business and industry, local community organizations throughout the foothill communities.
