Please join us in wishing a fond farewell to Stella Castillo, the L.A. as Subject Community Archives Specialist.
Stella was hired as the first ever L.A. as Subject Community Archives Specialist in 2018, a position made possible by the California State Library “Pitch an Idea” program. During the first year of the project, Stella worked closely with existing and new LAAS members in updating their profiles in the L.A. as Subject Directory by holding workshops and one-on-one meetings. All of these efforts were in preparation for the L.A. as Subject Directory Portal launch that happened in the fall of 2019. The Portal added new features for members, such as a photo gallery, event calendar, and article pages (see Lanterman House entry as an example).
Funded for a 2nd year, Stella continued to engage with members, individually and in small groups, and working with the grant project team to develop an open source version of a Collective Directory Portal that other affinity groups could freely use to centralize their collection information.
Stella also presented work on the 25-year evolution of the L.A. as Subject membership at the Digital Public Library of American and the Society of American Archivists conferences. She also has been instrumental in contributing to the Virtual Talk-Shops; social media posts; Archives Bazaar 2020 planning; and online tutorials and instruction videos.
All the while, Stella’s accomplishments were done with professionalism, affability, and intelligence. She is a tremendous colleague, archivist, and L.A. as Subject advocate.
