Learn the basics of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) a whole building approach with focused changes that can lessen pest invasions. IPM programs have been shown to reduce damage to collections and lessen the usage of toxic pesticides.
In this workshop, sponsored by the Los Angeles Preservation Network (LAPNet), you will learn:
- What types of pests most commonly show up in collections and what they eat.
- Tricks for identifying common pests found in libraries and museums.
- What steps to take to mitigate risk of pests.
- What pest invasion signs to watch out for.
- What to do when the worst happens - infestation.
- How best to implement an IPM program at your institution.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This workshop is geared toward library, archives, and museums who have responsibility for the preservation of collections and buildings. This workshop will feature many images of bugs, rodents, and other creepy crawlies.

Parking
Information about parking at CSUN can be found at: https://www.csun.edu/parking/visitor-parking-information. Go to Information Booth #2, located on Prairie Street off Darby Avenue. Here, the booth attendant(s) can you on where to park, provide a map and show you the closest parking area to the library. Parking Rates are $6 for 4 hours or $8 for all day, but I suggest an all-day parking pass because parking passes are strictly enforced, even during Intersession. Here is a map of the closest parking structures and freeways, just in case. If there is no parking attendant, go to the parking structures and purchase a parking pass from a kiosk in the structure.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Christina Bean is a paper conservator at 805 Conservation. She graduated with a Masters in Conservation: Works of Art on Paper in 2016 and was the Kress fellow at University of California Los Angeles, Library Conservation Center throughout 2017. From February to September 2018 she ran a project through 805 Conservation to work on disaster recovery of items from the January 2018 Montecito, California mudslides. She’s been talking about bugs to people who will stand still long enough for years.
